The Global Open Science Cloud (GOSC) initiative has launched its work plans for all the working groups (WGs) and case studies (CSs) ever since October 2021. After the first six-month implementation, a GOSC All Hands Meeting (AHM) was carried out on Jun 1st and 2nd to review the progress, and to facilitate the engagement between different stakeholders.
Members from the four working groups, the five case studies, and other potential interested parties, joined this conversation. Rolling reports of each group summarized their mission and timeline, achievements and progress, challenges, and call for action. Key challenges identified in different OSCs research scenarios include tailored data and technical interoperability solutions, efficient policies for research resources sharing, and sound governance model design, especially for reward mechanisms and sustainability issues. As for the next steps, key actions in WGs and CSs include: conducting a mapping exercise regarding the data policy and governance model jointly by the Policy & Legal WG and the Governance WG; addressing cutting-edge technical issues to better support the OSCs development led by the Technical Infrastructure WG; carrying out a set of case studies, addressing data interoperability issues in worldwide OSCs practices by the Data Interoperability WG. Besides, much more engagement between WGs and CSs is also encouraged as a way to validate theories and technics in tailored research scenarios.
"The AHM provides us with a better understanding of who we are, where we are now, and where we're heading for," says Simon Hodson, executive director of CODATA. Further this month, GOSC breakout sessions will continue during the hybrid International Data Week 2022. Further discussion will feature detailed research deliverables, cross-cutting issues in selected GOSC case studies, and potential alignment with worldwide OSCs. (Xueting LI, Lili ZHANG)
